The Fifth Happening
Date: 27/03/25 Venue: Our Hands We Make Our Way
For our Fifth Happening we return to the place we began and a place we've grown to love, By Our Hands We Make Our Way in Sneinton Market, a unique and frankly magical space. It's another line-up curated to "unite the eclectic within a holistic whole", as an audience member for Happening Four put it. We're honoured to welcome legendary underground rock experimentalists tenebrous LIAR, blending late period Talk Talk sparseness and emotion with Velvet Underground howling intensity, mysterious performer of the spoken word Dean Geary, and stark, occasionally funny, confessional singer-songwriter Eleanor McGregor. As ever, The Friends of Delia will be hanging around the edge, stitching and gluing. This one is darker and louder, but equally as fiery – a warm welcome guaranteed.
This is a bring-your-own-booze event.
tenebrous LIAR
“Heart-wringing, ear splitting guitar wrangling” Mojo
For the best part of two decades eminent music photographer, Steve Gullick, best known for his extensive photographic work with Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Bonnie‘Prince’ Billy, Cat Power etc. has steered this artful, brutal, yet simultaneously beautiful musical project through to the release of its ninth album - Hell Never Called. Following the band’s last full length release, The Cut (2017), Gullick retreated from full on amplification & made two critically acclaimed, cinematic, classical tinged albums with James Johnston (Gallon Drunk / PJ Harvey / Bad Seeds), We Travel Time (2021) & Everybody’s Sunset (2022). The new album Hell Never Called (2025) pulls together a mix of songs built from rehearsal room improvisations, meticulously rehearsed studio recordings & home recordings. In January 2023, Gullick & bass player Brendan Casey got together to discuss the next steps in the life of tenebrous LIAR. Gullick - “When we started writing, I was obsessed with the 1970 Dutch concert film ‘Stamping Ground’, it’s visually spellbinding & the performances are incredible, I just couldn’t get Jefferson Airplane & Santana out of my head... Aimee’s guitar work is really soulful & freeing, along with Bren & Ben, she keeps everything solid allowing me the space to really let rip.”
Eleanor McGregor
A much loved, brave performer and a singer of stark confessionals - McGregor shares her loneliest moments with the effect of making those around her less lonely. Her debut album Humour Me was released early in 2024, and EP Muscle Memory in January this year.
Dean GearyDean Geary
Dean is a musician / poet and somewhat reclusive performer of spoken word from North Nottinghamshire, known in latter years for sharing the bill with Delia Recordings favourites E.R. Thorpe, and The Low Drift. Dean Geary has released an EP under the name Geary, Dean Geary entitled Words Spoken - the extended track Blood Drain Away from Torn Sail's second album Leisure & Technology uses two complete works from Words Spoken - and an album with his band Yashmak Webs entitled To Madness We Worshipped - an album the making of which infamously led to the breakdown of it's protagonist and collaborators. Dean Geary's writing speaks of the people and places he's experienced during his life as both a social worker and psychiatric Social Worker.
