The Ninth Happening

Date: 26/09/26 Venue: St Johns Church

Presenting our Ninth Happening, a return to the grand space of St John’s Church Nave, rescheduled following World Cup shenanigans.

It’s a rejigged eclectic line-up with home-grown country, folk and Americana from Magic Car, Alucidnation’s aural architecture, with Bristol multi- instrumentalist Memotone, and Pete Hollingsworth warming up on the bench.

Due to availability, Foule now join us for The Tenth Happening in December, hopefully with additional festive sleigh bells.

Plus the Friends of Delia, value-priced bar, all-new bake sale, and now- legendary / mythical / infamous raffle.

Magic Car:

Another Nottingham cult band, operating under-the-radar with an if-you-know-you-know fanbase, and beloved of Whispering Bob Harris. Magic Car are a British Americana, country and folk rock band formed by the actor Phil Smeeton (songwriter and guitarist) and Hazel Atkinson (vocalist), and featuring Torn Sail and Brown Fang's John Thompson on bass guitar. Signed to the independent record label Tiny Dog Records they have released four albums -- Yellow Main Sequence (2001), Family Matters (2005) and European Punks (2002), a joint album with Scott 4. A fourth, Meteorites was released in 2016.

MEMOTONE:

Memotone is one alias of Will Yates, a composer and musician working at the fringes of the music industry. Leaning into jazz, folk, contemporary classical, ambient and esoteric fourth-world music. Memotone's live show is part pre-prepared/part improvised performance, using a mix of live instrumentation, samplers, effects and loopers to build a window into his singular soundworld.

Although self-taught, with a 'learn-by-playing' approach, Will is an experienced composer and musician, having written music for chamber ensembles, jazz trios and pop bands alike, and has worked with many artists and professionals over the years including Dmitry Evgrafov, Batu, Mister Water Wet, Time Is Away, Phaeleh, Tarotplane and commercially with brands like PALACE (Adidas, New Balance, Oakleys, Rimowa), Eli Roth, the BBC and many more, branching into both pop and the hidden recesses of the verdant underground as a satellite member of Bristol's 'Avon Terror Corps' and 'The Pheasantry Society'. He recently featured on 6 Music's 'Dream Time' show with an interview and half-hour of dreamy music, including a handful of his own music, is a semi-regular contributor to NTS and just finished a 6 month residency on Worldwide FM.

ALUCIDNATION:

Bruce Bickerton [aka Alucidnation] has been writing and producing music since heady days of the early 1990's. Moving from classical piano to studio engineer, the ambient house boom took Alucidnation to Big Chill Festivals in the UK, Greece and also in Goa. Bruce released two critically acclaimed albums on Big Chill Recordings; Induction and Get Lost.

PETE HOLLINGSWORTH:

Pete Hollingsworth is a singer songwriter who's been playing his music around Nottingham for five decades,  with prog bands, rock bands, on his own, and in a duet with a Sarod player.  In recent years he's been writing in the style of his biggest influences - Bob Dylan.
